Rainy season in the Cancun. What to expect in summer?

It happens to everyone. You’ve checked the weather report in anticipation of your upcoming Cancun vacation and are now studying a line of rain clouds and thunderstorm icons.

Suddenly you’re overcome with the feeling that you picked the wrong week to visit. But the good news is that tropical forecasts can be deceiving. Rain in the Caribbean isn’t usually rain at home, and a brief shower doesn’t have to mean ruining your plans or spending the day locked in your hotel room.

When is the rainy season in Cancun?

But for those asking: when is the rainy season in Cancun or when does it rain in Cancun… That time is roughly from June to October, with September enjoying the month with the highest number of rainy days on average.

But that being said, every year is unique, and like all things, the weather can change. But even during these periods, most days start with the sun.

The mornings are usually clear, and visitors can expect sun-drenched mornings relaxing on the beach, exploring local attractions, or enjoying time at the pool. By the afternoon, the clouds begin to form.

¿ When does the rainy season end in Cancun ? By early November, the atmosphere begins to dry out and the afternoons become almost completely clear, marking the start of the dry season that extends until April.

Hurricane season: what you need to know

The rains in Cancun overlap with the official Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, with higher activity between August and October. This doesn't mean your trip is at risk.

A direct hit on the city is uncommon and modern forecasting systems provide several days of advance notice to make decisions calmly. In any case, it is advisable to check the weather before traveling in September and October, just to be prepared, but it's no reason to think it's a bad idea to visit this destination.

What is the rainy season in Cancun really like?

While the term ‘Cancun rainy season’ might conjure up images of gray skies and days spent inside surfing the internet from your hotel room, that’s rarely the case. Sure, there are a few days each year when the Cancun area is stuck under a cloud, but more often than not, rain showers pass through the area quickly.

A few drops, followed by a downpour, and the skies quickly clear again. And before you know it, you’re back on the beach.

And while the rain might force you to change from the pool to the hotel bar or put a pause on your tour of ancient ruins, it does make the surrounding landscape transform. Plants start to turn a bit greener. Gardens thrive. And the area’s lush jungle feels a little more lively.

Why is it still a good time to travel?

There are many reasons; among the main ones are that you avoid the high season crowds, you can get more affordable rates, and you'll be able to enjoy a jungle that looks lush and very green.

For those who choose an all inclusive option, that flexibility multiplies: eating, having a drink, or changing activities because it started to rain stops being a logistical problem and becomes a natural part of the day, with no unexpected bills.

How to still make the most of a rainy day?

Summer rain is just another reason you’ll love Cancun! After all, what better time to explore a side of Cancun that's out of the sun’s reach? You'll be the only ones swimming in the cool, clear waters of an underground cenote for a couple of hours;

You’ll discover that local boutiques are filled to the rafters with to-die-for one-of-a-kind treasures, and you’ll have the taste of true Mexican cuisine in a local eatery to yourselves. Just remember to save some room for dessert. Oh, and don’t be surprised if the sun comes out by the time you’ve finished that third and final course!

The Mexican Caribbean is a great summer vacation destination. The water is warm and a crystal clear color, the foliage is a brilliant, lush green, and even the summer rain showers are dazzling. Travel any season with your FAVC membership, and make the most of the region, rain or blazing sun!
